Employee Time Off to Vote on Election Day
Employee Time Off to Vote on Election Day It’s a big election year, and voter turnout is expected to be high on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. This can result in employee requests to leave early or come in late so that they can vote. It’s a good idea to start planning for this now. Federal law doesn’t require businesses to close for election day, or to give any time off to vote. This has historically caused problems for voters. Many people struggle to make it to the polls if they have work, school, commutes, and other commitments that make it…
Hurricane Helene and Melton: Disaster Relief
As our week goes on, we continue to see the incredible devastation left behind by the recent hurricanes, and we want to do all that we can to support those affected. Our founder and CEO Paul Edwards, a North Carolina native, is hearing the damage and losses are far beyond what was initially estimated. With that in mind, we would like to share some resources with our members and their communities: Blue Ridge Public Radio compiled a list of more than 35 organizations providing relief in western North Carolina and federal resources for all affected areas. See their list here.…

Supporting Employees in Balancing Childcare and Work Schedules
School is in session and you need to know: do you have to adjust employee work schedules based on their childcare needs? Does this sound familiar? “I need to pick up my child from school starting next week - I need to leave early. Can we look at adjusting my schedule?” This is a common issue amongst pretty much all practice owners and managers, especially when school is starting up in the fall, and then when kids’ schedules change over the summer. Your employee comes to you and says they need to adjust their work schedule to adjust for childcare.…

EFFECTIVE TODAY: Exempt Employees Must Now Be Paid a Higher Minimum Salary
As of today, July 1, 2024, all salaried exempt employees must be paid at least $43,888 per year (equivalent to $844 per week). This is the result of an increase set by the Department of Labor. This increase has been subject to litigation, but no legal change has prevented the increase from going into effect. You may see in the news that a Texas lawsuit was successful in getting an injunction against this law. While this is true, the impact is extremely limited and does not impact any CEDR members. A court stopped the salary increase from going into effect…
