“All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.”
Jack Nicholson, The Shining
In the interest of not letting work take up your entire world and make you bored, boring, and crazy, I’d like to invite you to the crazy delicious world of pizza making! For my part, I fall back on a few things I am passionate about, which serve as welcome distractions.
My top favorite distraction is cooking, and in a past life, I faked my way into a cook’s job and ultimately became a chef. It was four years of incredible work and sacrifice of my body and savings account. Armed with all that, I love the science behind cooking; nothing is more scientific than making pizza.
Whether you have a bunch of kids around or just want to have fun at a party, you can pick up a pizza oven and start working on your dough recipe in no time.
In honor of National Pizza day, I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned.
Home pizza ovens have hit the market!
There are two comparably priced pizza ovens currently on the market. You can find the Ooni at Ace Hardware. My favorite choice is the RoxxBox made by Gozney, which you must order online.
I suggest you purchase the peel and the little round peel too, cause toys.
The next thing is the dough. Finding and perfecting a dough recipe has been the most challenging part. I’ve chased the holy grail of crusts which is crispy, a little thin, and not overly chewy. Typically known as NY-Style, it is not easy to accomplish. It’s been a year, and I am not closer to figuring it out, and it sort of explains why I also provided a link to the Peloton bike.
…Speaking of cheese, skim whole balls of mozzarella is the way to go!

Here Are Links to Things That Will Make Your Pizza Journey Smoother
None of these are affiliate links, ya’ll, as I just want to share.
- As I said, you’re going to need this after perfecting your pizza-making. So here is the Peleton exercise bike!
- You are going to need a scale.
- I watched this guy to get a feel for making pizza. But I have also been chasing the perfect crust. Here is a link to a lesson which is a starting point, and not all crust requires you to create what is known as the poolish as a first step, but I recommend you try it out.
- I bought my oven from here.
- The peels are here and here (You will need the large and small peels)
- The plastic pizza-proofing boxes for the dough are here.
- The table I bought to put my oven outside is here.

To Wrap It Up…
As you can see, I like the products that Ooni makes for my RoxxBox pizza oven 🙂 In conclusion, most of us are science-minded, hard-working, and focused on our work. While almost as frustrating as golf (which I refuse to play), pizza dough making has the added benefit of resulting in PIZZA! So it makes it extra worth it.
